News Update: Facebook to crackdown on deepfakes!
Facebook to crack down on ‘deepfakes’
Deepfakes are emerging more regularly on social media platforms which are misleading and manipulating users.
Some deep fakes are purely for fun, but others can cause an uproar on the internet!
Facebook has announced that they are addressing deepfakes and manipulated media buy collaborating with more than 50 global experts with a range of backgrounds to help inform and educate Facebook’s policy department and to help improve the science of detecting deepfakes.
Facebook has said it will now remove the following:
It has been edited or synthesized – beyond adjustments for clarity or quality – in ways that aren’t apparent to an average person and would likely mislead someone into thinking that a subject of the video said words that they did not actually say. And:
It is the product of artificial intelligence or machine learning that merges, replaces or superimposes content onto a video, making it appear to be authentic.
However, manipulated media that is parody or satire or a video edited to change the order of words will not be removed. If these videos are deemed to be fake by one of Facebook’s independent third-party fact-checkers, they will not be able to be used in ads and users will be informed that the video is fake.
