Social Media Spotlight - Mel Bridger
Name: Mel Bridger
Job Title: I have many! Blogger - CEO of Beatz Fitness - Personal Trainer
Experience: 10 years.
I manage all of the Social Media Marketing for all of my Fitness Businesses, I started years ago, using Flyers, Banners and the local press to get exposure. I use Facebook predominantly for the businesses we have, I also speak at events about Video Content Creation and I ran my own event this year called FINE - Fitness Instructors Networking Event.
What do you love most about social media: I love the engagement that it brings and the relationships Iโve made over the years. Iโve made some incredible friends that I never would have had the opportunity to meet if not for Social Media!
Favourite social media platform: Facebook for Business, Twitter for fun!
Top tip: Use video! It changes your business and increases your visibility!
What does your day to day work consist of?: Every day tends to be different!
Regular Routine: Drop the kids to school, PT clients in the morning - I do a lot of Content Creation for the different businesses so I can be doing anything from writing a Blog Post to creating a podcast!
Sometimes I have to create choreography for classes so that breaks the computer work up a bit ๐
Pick kids up, dinner, then I teach in the evenings sometimes so my husband does the bedtime routine.
What challenges do you face within your role?: Iโm Self Employed so I have different revenue streams, my industry peaks at different times so Iโm always trying to find different ways to make a regular income (nigh on impossible) when the quieter periods kick in.
I wish I could outsource but sometimes itโs not an option so I do everything myself and that can be overwhelming at times!
Are there any social media tools you use to make your job easier?: A few! I use Facebookโs native scheduler for posts, Tweetdeck if Iโm scheduling content for Twitter, Headliner for podcast promotion.
As there are so many changes to social media, how do you keep up to date with the latest information? Iโm signed up to a few newsletters, I follow key people in the industry and I attend conferences/events whenever I can.
For someone looking to get into a social media role, where would you advise them to start? Have a look at roles online and check out the job descriptions to see what people are looking for.
Do your research and be prepared to put the hours in!
Donโt try and be an expert on every platform, pick one or two and make sure you know them inside out.
Be aware of what the latest trends are and how they could potentially affect your client base.
Follow people in your industry and ask questions!
What's been your best social media success story to date (Can be your own or client) and why? Creating weekly videos on LinkedIn for over six months and getting booked by Lucy Hall to speak at Digital Women about Video Content Creation because she saw what Iโd been doing and liked what Iโd done ๐
What has been your favourite social media campaign (Big or Small) this year so far and why?: I liked the Community Fitness Networks Campaign to get people to support local food banks by bringing food into classes.
They managed to support nearly 400 food banks across the country and get more people active at the same time!
Finally, what would you like the future of social media to be?: Less salesy content and more interaction/video content that involves everyone, not just those who can afford the best equipment/software!
