Q&A with Nick Entwistle

Today in our series of Q&As with SocialDay, we’re speaking to Nick Entwistle, Creative Director and Founder of the uber-creative Twitter sensation One Minute Briefs (OMB). OMB is a community user-generated content platform which encourages instinctive creativity and produces content that truly engages audiences and generates huge traction for brands. Nick also hosts annual events, holds educational workshops with D&AD and the V&A, and delivers talks at agencies, universities, and the likes of the BBC, Lloyds Bank and Sky.

At SocialDay 2021, Nick will be discussing the power of the OMBLES (AKA the One Minute Briefs community) and how collective creativity can achieve huge impacts for campaigns that have worldwide reach. Before that though, we thought we’d ask him a few questions about him and get to know him a little better…

Hi Nick! First off, if you had to describe yourself using 3 emojis what would they be?

💙⚽🎱

Now on to the real questions 😉. What’s your favourite thing about working in social media marketing?

Making a difference in people’s lives. Helping people to better their careers, confidence and creativity at the same time as delivering impactful campaigns for brands and causes.

Social Media can be quite divisive at the moment so it’s nice to be able to create a community of positivity to help improve people’s well being and create an inclusive place for people to share ideas without judgement.

Is there a One Minute Brief or campaign you’ve worked on in the last year that stood out to you and why?

The WWF #WorldWithoutNature campaign had reach of half a billion. This stemmed from an initial simple idea by Ze Anwar in late 2019 where animals and nature were taken off brand and team logos and badges.

Collectively, we were able to get lots of organisations involved and build momentum towards #WorldWildlifeDay. Even Greta tweeted about the campaign.

Amazing! So, creativity is obviously a quality that underpins everything you do at One Minute Briefs and Bank of Creativity. Do you think creativity itself is something that can be taught and learnt? And if so, how can people ‘become’ more creative?

I think there is creativity within everyone. Anyone can come up with a good idea. The most important thing is to remove the fear of sharing an idea. OMB does that by applying a One Minute restriction on your ideas that is actually quite liberating as it allows you to rely on your instinct. And, if it’s no good you’ve only spent a minute on it. More often than not, these ideas are good ones as they are not overthought. As we get older, we talk ourselves out of our own ideas. It’s proven that the more OMBs you do, the better you become and the more wins you get. This also comes from seeing what else wins. The simplest ideas are always the best.

What are 3 key takeaways people will get from your SocialDay session?

Community. Creativity. Collaboration.

Short and sweet, we love it. And what are you personally most excited about for SocialDay 2021?

I’m excited to be part of the event alongside some brilliant speakers. I’m particularly pleased that it’s going to be in real life. Although it’s all about social media, I think it’s important to be able to make those real-life connections that you’ve build online.

Thanks so much Nick! If you’d love to learn more about the power of the OMBLES, book your ticket to SocialDay 2021 today. Book before the end of July and you’ll also save 30% with our early bird offer!
