Facebook rebrands itself as Meta

Facebook has officially changed its name to Meta ahead of a major rebrand, representing its shift in direction towards building its metaverse. The names of the apps owned by Meta - Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger - will keep their names. Through its metaverse, Meta aims to build an online world where people can game, work and communicate within a virtual world. The rebrand has arrived at a rather convenient time, with Facebook’s reputation hitting a very much downwards spiral in recent months in light of multiple allegations of the company putting ‘profits before safety’, withholding important information about vaccine misinformation and the effects of its platforms on young people’s mental health.

Instagram rolls out link stickers to all accounts

Finally the news social media managers and creators the world over have been waiting for: Instagram has officially rolled out its link stickers to all accounts. The stickers will allow all accounts, including those with less than 10k followers, to post links in Stories. In an announcement on its blog, Instagram explained that it decided to expand access to the feature after listening to feedback from its community.

TikTok announces new partner integrations

TikTok has announced it is expanding its current Video Kit offerings,  partnering with new platforms including Clipchamp, Combo, Crabyo and Kapwing and integrating them with TikTok. Creators will now get access to the video creation, editing and repurposing tools offered by these third parties, giving them more opportunities to get creative and post high quality content on the platform.

Facebook announces new iOS app will let users make their own AR filters

Looks like Snapchat is always one step ahead. Facebook is following in Snap’s footsteps with a new app that will allow users to make and share their own AR filters. The free iOS app, currently codenamed ‘Polar’, was unveiled at the platform’s virtual 2021 Connect conference, and will aim to empower creators without coding experience to embrace Augmented Reality.

LinkedIn launches new freelancer and company page tools

LinkedIn has launched a range of new freelancer and company page tools for its professional users. Its freelancer connection tools now include advanced discovery features such as recommendation tools and search filters, to allow businesses to hone in on what they need from freelancers. The platform has also streamlined its freelancer connection process, allowing businesses to immediately request services from freelancers without needing to connect or follow them.

LinkedIn’s new company page tools include a new Primary Workplace display option, which enables businesses to give more information on how often their employees work remotely. In the same space, businesses will also now be able to communicate their policies on areas such as vaccines and pay adjustments more easily with potential employees.
