Introducing music revenue sharing: giving Facebook creators a new way to earn money with popular music

Meta’s Facebook is introducing music revenue sharing, allowing video creators to include licensed music in their videos on Facebook and earn a share of in-stream ad revenue, opening up a new way to earn money for both creators and music rights holders.

With music revenue sharing on Facebook, creators can now include popular music from our expansive licensed catalogue, featuring artists such as Post Malone, Tove Lo, Grupo La Cumbia, Leah Kate, Bicep and more in their videos.

This feature is the first of its kind within the music industry. No other platform offers creators this type of revenue model at this scale.

With video making up half of the time spent on Facebook, music revenue sharing helps creators access more popular music, deepening relationships with their fans – and the music industry. Made possible through our partnerships across the music industry, this feature is the first of its kind at this scale, benefiting creators, our partners, music rights.

Meta: Helping creators build a business now — and for the Metaverse

To help creators better connect with their fans, build a business and prepare for the Metaverse, Meta is announcing several new features and tools across Facebook and Instagram.

Meta say they are extending their commitment to not collect any revenue share from subscriptions, badges, paid online events and bulletin until 1 January, 2024.

Meta are also opening Facebook Stars to all eligible creators, adding monetisation options for Reels, testing a space for brands and creators to easily connect on Instagram, introducing new ways to bring your subscribers with you from other platforms and expanding their digital collectible testing.

Photo sharing App BeReal Soars to Top of Apple Charts

BeReal, a photo-sharing app dubbed the “anti-Instagram,” has soared in popularity in recent weeks to take the number one spot in the U.S. on Apple’s App Store charts — beating TikTok.

In total, BeReal has been downloaded over 20 million times. It had 1.7 million downloads during the week of July 11, the biggest weekly gain ever, while this past Saturday was the app’s best day ever for downloads, according to data shared with Fast Company by digital analytics platform Sensor Tower.

As well as taking the top spot among free apps in Apple’s U.S. Store, the United States is currently BeReal’s top market, representing about 35 percent of its users — followed by the U.K. with 17 percent and France with 10 percent.

TikTok to provide researchers with more transparency as damaging reports mount

TikTok is making it easier for researchers to delve into the data and protocols that make up the platform. In a blog post, TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas announced the company will soon grant researchers access to the framework behind the platform and its moderation system.

Pappas says TikTok will soon provide access to the “public and anonymized data” on the platform so “selected researchers” can “assess content and trends or conducts tests.” The company will also give researchers a way to probe its existing moderation system, evaluate the content on TikTok, and experiment with different types of content to see what gets rejected. Later this year, researchers will have access to TikTok’s moderation tools at its transparency center, a virtual hub where people can learn more about TikTok’s policies and get updates about the changes it’s making.

Introducing Home and Feeds on Facebook

I an announcement made by Zuckerburg last week Facebook are launching the Feeds tab, a new way to find the most recent posts from your friends, Favorites, Pages and groups. You can curate a Favorites list of the friends and Pages you care about most and filter their content in this new tab.

Home is the new name of the tab you first see when you open Facebook to discover new content. From Home, you can easily access Reels and Stories and get personalized recommendations.

Mark Zuckerburg said: We’re making it easier for you to control what content you see and discover on Facebook. We’re introducing Feeds, a new tab that lets you easily see the most recent posts from your friends, Pages and groups. You can curate a Favorites list of the friends and Pages you care about most and filter their content in this new tab. We’re also naming the primary tab — the first thing you see when you open the app — Home. Home is the starting point for connection, entertainment and discovery on Facebook.

Frictionless Shopping Is Here. YouTube and Instagram Join TikTok With New Social Commerce Tools

Through a new partnership with Shopify, YouTube creators can now directly link their products across their channels and content, including in livestream videos. U.S.-based users of the feature can enable onsite checkout, which can allow shoppers to make purchases directly on YouTube. To use the new shopping feature, YouTube creators must have more than 1,000 subscribers and must have their channel approved for monetization. "I predict that this will heavily impact my conversion rate, which will help more people give my products and my brand a chance to become part of their everyday life," Cassey Ho, founder of the Pilates brand Blogilates, said in a press release announcing the Shopify partnership.

These updates are just the latest in a growing trend towards social commerce. In November, Pinterest launched a live shopping series dubbed Pinterest TV. And last summer, TikTok unveiled in-app shopping integrations through Square and Shopify. In 2021, sales made through social media hit an estimated $492 billion -- and experts predict that number will grow to $1.2 trillion, according to a report from Accenture.
