The friction iOS users still hit
WhatsApp is testing support for up to three accounts on iOS, according to code discovered in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.37.10.15 update from TestFlight. The new multi-account feature is currently under development on iOS, and since this functionality is in development, it is not ready for beta testing.
For now, iPhone users can officially manage up to two accounts inside WhatsApp. WhatsApp officially rolled out support for multiple accounts on iPhone last June, allowing users to add a second account to the same app. But that two-account limit creates a meaningful bottleneck for anyone running three professional lines or managing personal, client, and side-business numbers on the same device.
The gap shows most clearly for social media professionals, freelancers, and small business owners who run multiple brands or client accounts and cannot consolidate them without blurring boundaries. Previously, users who needed more than one WhatsApp account on an iPhone had to use a second device or rely on WhatsApp Business, and the existing two-account feature reduced that need. The third slot closes that remaining workaround gap.
What changes for someone using three numbers
The three-account system works the same way as the two-account one, with every account on the device having its own chat history, notifications, privacy settings, backup, and media. Users who receive a message on their third account get a notification that shows which account it belongs to, so there is no confusion about where to reply.
App Lock also works independently per account, so users can secure their accounts with their own authentication. That separation matters for anyone who needs different people to access different accounts or who wants client work walled off from personal chats.
The interface stays minimal. The reported interface remains similar to the existing multi-account system, with users seeing an account's name, profile photo and phone number, while a green checkmark identifies the account currently in use. Once two accounts are already active, the "Add account" option could remain available, allowing users to add a third profile.
Platform gap and where this leaves Android
Platform parity remains incomplete as of September 2026, and while iOS users testing through Apple TestFlight evaluate the three-account framework, Android implementations remain capped at a maximum of two parallel profiles. That is a reversal of the usual pattern. WhatsApp did bring its two-account feature to iPhone about two years after Android got it, so Android may eventually catch up again, but no timeline has been confirmed.
The two-account cap on both platforms has pushed anyone needing more numbers into workarounds: carrying multiple devices, using WhatsApp Business as a second personal line, or reaching for third-party tools that isolate browser sessions. Those methods work but add complexity, cost, or security trade-offs that the native three-account feature would eliminate for most users.
For brands and agencies managing multiple clients, the real threshold is higher still. In Meta Business Manager, you can add up to 10 WhatsApp Business accounts per workspace, and each WhatsApp Business account operates separately and has its own phone number, message template, and quality rating. But that requires moving to the WhatsApp Business API, a step that brings cost, setup friction, and technical overhead many small operations are not ready for.
Managing multiple phone numbers will no longer require users to choose which account to keep on the same device. (- WABetaInfo, September 2026)
Why this matters beyond the marginal user
The third account is not about feature bloat. It is about reducing the point at which WhatsApp forces a workflow decision. Right now, the moment a social media manager picks up a third client line or a freelancer starts a side project, they either compromise by merging it into an existing account (risking message bleed and professionalism), carry a second device, or invest time in more complex multi-account infrastructure.
A marketing consultant who manages multiple brands can dedicate a WhatsApp number to each activity with multiple accounts, keeping conversations with different clients separate. That separation is not cosmetic. It determines whether you can hand off one client account to a colleague without exposing the others, whether notifications stay manageable when one line is busy, and whether you can set different away hours or auto-replies per role.
Meta's own research showed that nearly 20 percent of WhatsApp users in emerging markets already relied on unofficial methods to run multiple accounts. Bringing the limit to three reduces that unofficial behaviour and gives Meta more control over the multi-account experience before users route around it.
The timing also aligns with WhatsApp's push into business workflows, where professional use increasingly sits alongside personal messaging. The difference between two and three accounts is the difference between "just enough" and "enough to grow into" for a meaningful segment of users who are not yet ready to move to the Business API but need more than the current cap allows.
What still forces the API leap
Three accounts solves the friction for individuals and very small operations. It does not replace the need for the WhatsApp Business API once you have a team, need automation, or manage five or more lines.
According to WhatsApp, you can link up to four devices and a mobile phone using one WhatsApp account, and this is possible only if you have a WhatsApp Business account. That linked-device model works for small teams sharing one number but breaks down when you need separate numbers, role-based access, or message assignment across a team. At that point, the API and a shared inbox provider become unavoidable, and the three-account feature becomes irrelevant.
But for the freelancer, the side-project founder, or the social lead managing a personal line, a main brand, and a campaign-specific number, three accounts removes the moment they have to choose between awkward compromises and heavyweight infrastructure. That is the segment this change serves, and it is not small.
WhatsApp may support even more than three accounts in the future, but no specifics have been shared. Meta has not yet disclosed a firm timeline for graduating the three-account build from its current developmental sandbox to a stable, public release channel.
