Algorithm
A set of rules used by social media platforms to determine which content is shown to which users, and in what order. Algorithms consider factors including engagement signals (likes, shares, comments, saves), recency, relationship between creator and viewer, content type, and user behaviour.
Each platform has its own algorithm, and these change frequently. What works on LinkedIn may be ineffective on Instagram or TikTok.
Analytics
The collection, measurement, and analysis of social media data to understand performance and audience behaviour. Analytics encompasses both native platform data (e.g. Instagram Insights, LinkedIn Analytics) and third-party tools.
Audience Segmentation
The practice of dividing a social media audience into distinct subgroups based on shared characteristics such as demographics, interests, behaviours, or purchase intent. Used to deliver more relevant content and paid campaigns.
Authenticity
The quality of content or brand communication that feels genuine, honest, and human rather than corporate or manufactured. Authenticity has become a core value in social media marketing, particularly with younger audiences.
Brand Voice
The consistent personality, tone, and communication style a brand uses across all social media channels. A strong brand voice differentiates an organisation and builds audience trust over time.
Boosted Post
An organic social media post that has been given paid distribution to extend its reach beyond the existing audience. Boosting promotes existing content rather than creating purpose-built ads, but offers fewer targeting and creative options.
Brand Awareness
The extent to which a target audience recognises and recalls a brand. A primary objective for many social media strategies, particularly at the top of the marketing funnel. Measured via reach, impressions, share of voice, and branded search volume.
Caption
The text accompanying a social media post image, video, or link. Captions serve to contextualise content, drive engagement, reinforce brand voice, and support discoverability via keywords and hashtags.
Call to Action (CTA)
A prompt within content that encourages the audience to take a specific next step, such as clicking a link, commenting, sharing, signing up, or making a purchase.
Content Calendar
A planning document that maps out social media content across a defined time period. It records what content will be published, on which platforms, at what time, and by whom.
Content Pillars
The core themes or topics around which a brand's social media content is built. Typically 3-6 pillars that reflect brand values, audience interests, and business objectives.
Example pillars: Industry News / Career Advice / Behind the Scenes / Community Spotlights / Product Showcase.
Community Management
The practice of actively managing and nurturing relationships with an online community. It encompasses responding to comments and messages, moderating discussions, escalating complaints, and fostering positive community culture.
Conversion Rate
The percentage of social media users who take a desired action out of the total who were exposed to or clicked on the content.
Formula: (Conversions ÷ Total Clicks or Sessions) × 100
Creator Economy
The ecosystem of independent content creators, including influencers, YouTubers, podcasters, and newsletter writers, who monetise their audiences directly through brand partnerships, subscriptions, merchandise, and platform revenue sharing.
Dark Social
Content sharing that occurs via private, untrackable channels such as direct messages, email, WhatsApp, and private Slack groups. Dark social represents a significant portion of content sharing but is largely invisible to standard analytics.
Dark Post
A paid social advertisement that does not appear on a brand's organic timeline and is only visible to the targeted audience. Dark posts allow advertisers to test multiple ad variations and target different segments.
Engagement
Any interactive action a user takes in response to content, including likes, comments, shares, saves, reactions, clicks, and replies. Engagement is a primary indicator of content resonance and is used by algorithms to determine distribution.
Engagement Rate
A metric that measures the level of interaction content receives relative to its reach or follower count. More meaningful than raw engagement numbers because it accounts for audience size.
Common formula: (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100. Averages vary significantly by platform and industry.
Evergreen Content
Content that remains relevant and valuable over a long period, independent of news cycles or seasonal trends. Glossaries, how-to guides, and industry explainers are classic examples.
Feed
The main stream of content users see when they open a social media platform. Feeds were originally chronological but are now largely algorithm-driven on most platforms.
Follower
A user who has chosen to subscribe to a social media account. Follower count is a vanity metric when viewed in isolation; audience quality, engagement rate, and target alignment are more strategically meaningful.
Frequency
In paid social, the average number of times an individual user has been shown a specific advertisement within a given time period. High frequency can lead to ad fatigue.
Geo-Targeting
The practice of delivering social media content or advertising to users based on their geographic location. Can be applied at country, region, city, or radius level. Essential for local businesses and event marketing.
Hashtag
A word or phrase preceded by the # symbol used to categorise content and make it discoverable. Strategic hashtag use increases content discoverability, though algorithm changes on some platforms have reduced their reach impact.
Hook
The opening line, image, or moment of content designed to capture attention and compel users to stop scrolling. Effective hooks often pose a question, make a bold statement, or immediately signal value.
Impressions
The total number of times content has been displayed, regardless of whether it was clicked or engaged with. One user can generate multiple impressions. Impressions differ from reach, which counts unique individuals.
Influencer Marketing
A form of social media marketing in which brands partner with individuals who have established audiences. Tiers range from mega-influencers (millions) to nano-influencers (under 10k). Micro and nano-influencers often demonstrate higher engagement rates.
KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
A measurable value used to evaluate the success of a social media strategy against its objectives. KPIs should be tied to business goals and chosen before campaigns begin. Common KPIs include engagement rate, reach, CTR, and conversion rate.
Link in Bio
A clickable URL placed in a social media profile's biography field, used to direct followers to a website or content hub. Particularly important on Instagram and TikTok, where links cannot be placed in post captions.
Lookalike Audience
A paid social targeting feature that reaches new users who share similar characteristics to an existing custom audience (e.g. current customers, website visitors). A powerful prospecting tool that leverages real data.
Micro-Influencer
A content creator with a following typically between 10,000 and 100,000. Valued for high engagement rates, authentic audience relationships, and niche authority. Often delivers stronger ROI than larger influencers for targeted campaigns.
Monthly Active Users (MAU)
The number of unique users who engage with a social media platform at least once within a calendar month. A primary metric used by platforms to report scale and growth.
Native Content
Content created specifically for the platform on which it is published, formatted to match that platform's norms and user expectations. Native content performs better than repurposed content because it feels natural.
Organic Reach
The number of unique users who see content without any paid promotion. Organic reach is determined by algorithms and is generally declining across most platforms due to competition and monetisation pressures.
Paid Reach
The number of unique users who see content as a result of paid promotion. Used to supplement organic reach, extend content to new audiences, and drive specific business outcomes.
Pinned Post
A post manually fixed to the top of a social media profile's feed, regardless of publication date. Used to highlight key content such as brand announcements, popular content, or campaigns.
Reach
The total number of unique users who have seen a specific piece of content. Unlike impressions, each individual is counted only once. A key metric for awareness-focused campaigns.
Retargeting
A paid social strategy targeting advertisements at users who have previously interacted with a brand, such as visiting a website, engaging with content, or appearing in a customer database. Highly effective for warm audiences.
ROI (Return on Investment)
A measure of the financial return generated relative to the cost of a social media investment. Calculating true ROI requires attributing business outcomes to social media activity.
Formula: (Revenue from Social - Cost of Social) / Cost of Social x 100
Share of Voice (SOV)
A metric measuring a brand's presence in social media conversations relative to competitors. A key competitive intelligence metric and indicator of brand authority within a sector.
Formula: Brand Mentions ÷ Total Industry Mentions × 100
Social Listening
Monitoring social media platforms for mentions of a brand, competitors, and industry keywords, then analysing data to inform strategy. Surfaces audience sentiment, emerging trends, and crisis signals.
Social Proof
The psychological principle that people look to the behaviour of others to guide their own decisions. Manifests as follower counts, engagement numbers, user reviews, and influencer endorsements.
Social Media Audit
A systematic review of a brand's social media presence, performance, and strategy. Covers all active accounts, content performance, audience data, competitive benchmarking, and brand consistency.
Stories
A content format of ephemeral photos or short videos visible for 24 hours. Stories appear above the main feed and are typically more casual, behind-the-scenes, and interactive than feed content.
Sentiment Analysis
The use of technology or manual review to classify social media mentions as positive, negative, or neutral. Part of social listening that provides insight into how audiences feel about a brand or topic.
Tone of Voice
The way a brand communicates: its personality, language style, and emotional register. A well-defined tone creates consistency across platforms and team members, building recognisable brand identity.
Trending
Content, topics, hashtags, or formats experiencing a rapid increase in social media activity. Brands that participate authentically can benefit from increased visibility, though relevance and brand fit must always be evaluated.
UGC (User-Generated Content)
Content created and shared by customers or community members rather than by the brand itself. Highly valuable as social proof, cost-effective to source, and typically achieves higher trust and engagement than branded content.
Vanity Metrics
Data points that appear impressive on the surface but do not correlate meaningfully with business outcomes. Classic examples include total follower count and raw impression numbers when viewed without context.
Viral Content
Content that spreads rapidly and extensively through organic sharing, far beyond the creator's existing audience. Virality is unpredictable; emotional resonance, humour, novelty, and relatability are common characteristics.
Webinar
An online seminar or presentation hosted live, often promoted via social media. Used by brands to establish thought leadership, generate leads, and provide value to their community.
