    The real hero of proofreading

I have a bit of a love–hate relationship with Grammarly… but mostly love. It’s like that one friend who politely whispers, “Are you sure you don't have a typo in that email?” before you embarrass yourself It catches grammar mistakes, awkward sentences, and even tells you if your message sounds too aggressive or too apologetic. It basically acts like a tiny editor living inside your laptop. The downside? Sometimes it gets a little overconfident and suggests changes that don’t quite make sense, especially for creative writing. Still, if you write emails, posts, or blogs every day like I do, it’s a lifesaver. Just remember: don’t accept every suggestion blindly.

The free version is basically useless, the pro version is good but hard to justify

Very honestly, the free version of Grammarly is more annoying than it is helpful. It sits in the corner of everything you're writing, flags things you didn't ask it to flag, and the moment you actually want it to do something useful it tells you to upgrade. It almost puts you off the tool entirely before you've had a chance to see what it can actually do. The Pro version is a different experience though, it's genuinely useful for tightening up copy, catching things you've read over too many times to notice anymore, and the tone suggestions are actually helpful when you're writing for different clients and need to sense check whether something lands right. The issue now is that it's expensive for what it is, and with AI writing tools doing a lot of the heavy lifting these days it's getting harder to justify the cost as a standalone subscription. I still use it but I think about it every renewal.

    Pros:

Pro version is solid for copy editing and tone checking, catches things you miss when you've been staring at the same document too long, integrates across most places you're writing

    Cons:

Free version is practically useless and mostly just gets in the way, expensive for a single tool especially when AI alternatives are closing the gap fast
