YouTube's Demand Gen now lets viewers message brands directly from video ads

Google is testing a way for people to start conversations with brands through messaging apps directly from Demand Gen ads on YouTube. The feature is designed to shorten the journey for high-intent prospects, allowing someone who discovers a brand through a video ad to move directly into a conversation rather than navigating through a more traditional conversion path.

The updates are part of Google's August Demand Gen Drop and build on hundreds of improvements the company says it made to the campaign type during the second half of 2025.

The new messaging capability is currently in testing and represents a shift in how YouTube video ads can function for lead generation advertisers. Rather than only sending viewers to a website or landing page, brands can now open a direct line of communication from the ad unit itself.

Google, August 2026 Demand Gen Drop

What changes for social media marketers

For lead gen campaigns, this matters because it removes a step. A viewer watching a YouTube video can tap straight into a messaging conversation without breaking their viewing session. Google's focus is on moving customers who already demonstrate strong intent closer to a purchase by making it easier to contact the advertiser from the ad experience.

The implications are clearest for service businesses, B2B advertisers, and anyone whose conversion depends on a conversation rather than a click. If your funnel relies on a contact form or a phone call, this becomes a faster route to the same outcome, with the added benefit of staying inside an environment the user is already comfortable in.

It also changes the job the ad creative needs to do. Instead of optimising purely for a click to a landing page, the creative now needs to prompt a question or surface a need urgent enough that someone will start a conversation immediately. That is a higher bar.

Travel gets local activities and real-time offers

Google is also expanding Demand Gen capabilities specifically for travel advertisers, with ads now able to surface local activities, events and real-time offers, while hotel advertising is becoming more personalized so relevant properties can be shown to the audiences Google considers most appropriate.

This builds on the Travel Feeds feature introduced in January 2026, which let advertisers connect their Hotel Center feed to build dynamic video ads featuring hotel pricing, ratings and availability. The August update extends that capability beyond hotels into the experiences and activities layer, which is where most travellers actually spend their time and budget once they arrive.

83 days Average booking window for Southeast Asia travellers in 2025, up from 46 days in 2024 Google/Visa, 2026

That could make Demand Gen more useful for travel businesses looking to connect discovery-focused advertising with offers based on what travelers may actually want to do or book. For social media marketers in travel, this is where the platform finally starts competing properly with Meta and TikTok on inspiration-driven inventory. YouTube Shorts placements showing a parasailing experience in Bali, with real-time pricing and a book button, is a very different product to a generic awareness ad.

The timing matters. Southeast Asia consumers booked 83 days in advance in 2025, up from 46 days in 2024, an 80% increase in the planning horizon. Longer booking windows mean discovery advertising has more room to work before the traveller shifts into high-intent search mode. Demand Gen's feed-based placements (YouTube, Discover, Gmail) sit exactly in that earlier, browsing-heavy phase.

AI video creation opens to all advertisers

Google has also expanded video creation by making Multimodal Video Creation in Asset Studio available to all advertisers, so they can now go from storyboarding to creating horizontal and vertical assets in one workflow.

The tool is built with Gemini Omni, Google DeepMind's flagship multimodal model, and is now enabling new video creation capabilities directly within Asset Studio in Google Ads. Advertisers can provide their brand guidelines and website URL, enter a creative brief or select existing static assets, and use Gemini Omni to generate video storyboards and motion scenes.

Multimodal capabilities powered by Gemini Omni are rolling out globally as a free feature inside Google Ads.

This matters because creative volume has become a constraint. Demand Gen campaigns perform better with multiple asset variations across different formats (horizontal, vertical, square) and placements (YouTube in-feed, Shorts, Discover, Gmail). Producing all of that used to require either a production budget or compromises. Gemini Omni lowers the cost and time, which should make it easier to test more concepts and refresh creative faster.

The quality question is still open. Early AI video tools have ranged from surprisingly effective to obviously synthetic. Advertisers will still need to scrutinize whether AI-generated videos genuinely meet their brand standards rather than relying solely on Gemini Omni's interpretation of their guidelines. But if the output is good enough for testing or for lower-funnel placements where the message matters more than production value, the efficiency gain is real.

Why this drop matters

Google's August Demand Gen Drop pushes the campaign type further toward measurable customer acquisition, combining direct conversations, more personalized travel advertising and scalable AI-generated video creative.

Demand Gen launched in 2023 as Google's answer to paid social, designed to compete with Meta and TikTok on visual, feed-based inventory. It absorbed Video Action Campaigns and Discovery Ads, and has since been picking up features month by month through the Demand Gen Drop series. The August update is notable because it closes gaps that have kept some advertisers from scaling it: lead gen had no direct response path beyond a landing page, travel lacked activity-level inventory, and creative production was a bottleneck for anyone without an in-house team.

Each of those three problems now has a solution in testing or rolling out.

For social media marketers, the bigger question is whether Demand Gen finally becomes a must-run alongside Meta and TikTok, or whether it stays a secondary test budget. The answer will depend on whether the messaging feature works in practice, whether travel inventory proves deep enough, and whether Gemini Omni can actually produce creative that performs. August's update gives the campaign type the tools to compete. Whether it wins the budget will show up in the data over the next quarter.

What to do next

If you run lead gen campaigns on YouTube, request access to the messaging test. It is still in closed testing, but the earlier you can evaluate whether conversation-based CTAs outperform landing page clicks, the better positioned you are when it rolls out widely.

Travel advertisers should connect activity and experience feeds if they have them, or start building partnerships with experience platforms if they do not. The local activities capability only works if there is inventory to pull from.

For everyone else, the AI video tool is live now and free. Test it. Generate a few variations of an existing brief, compare performance against your current creative, and decide whether the output quality is high enough to replace or supplement your production workflow. If it is, you just got faster and cheaper creative. If it is not, you have lost an afternoon, which is a low cost for finding out.

The pattern across all three features is the same: Google is making it easier to produce more, test faster, and convert sooner. The marketers who adapt their workflow to take advantage of that will have an edge. The ones who wait for proof will be playing catch-up by Q4.
